Wrexham and Cardiff City will reignite one of Welsh football’s oldest rivalries on Tuesday night as they face off in the EFL Cup fourth round at the Racecourse Ground. Kick-off is at 7.45pm, and the match will be shown live on Sky Sports+, with streaming available on Sky Go and NOW.

A place in the quarter-finals is up for grabs and both sides are expected to field strong teams for this huge all Welsh clash.

This fixture carries plenty of history and emotion, with both clubs having long been among Wales’ most famous footballing names. Their paths haven’t crossed too often in recent years, but this cup tie feels like the perfect occasion for the rivalry to be reignited.

Wrexham come into the match sitting mid-table in the Championship after a mixed start to life in the second tier. Phil Parkinson’s side have had to learn quickly following three consecutive promotions, and while they’ve found consistency hard to come by, they’ve shown real resilience particularly at home. Their fighting spirit has been on full display in the cup, having already knocked out Hull, Preston, and Reading on their way to this stage.

The Dragons’ attacking approach has made them one of the more entertaining sides to watch. They’re confident going forward but still prone to defensive lapses, with both teams scoring in 11 of their 15 matches this season. That leaky back line could be tested again against a Cardiff side full of confidence.

Cardiff, meanwhile, are flying high in League One under Erol Bulut. They sit top of the table despite a recent 2-0 defeat at Bolton and have looked one of the most complete teams in the division so far. Their strong midfield and quick transitions have been key to their success, and they’ve already proven their quality in this competition, knocking out Premier League side Burnley in the previous round.

For the Bluebirds, this match represents more than just progress in the EFL Cup, it’s a chance to lay down a marker against their Welsh rivals and maintain momentum in what has been a promising campaign. They’ve kept things tight at the back, but they can be caught out by well-worked set pieces, something Wrexham are likely to target.

The atmosphere at the Racecourse Ground will be electric, and given both teams’ attacking styles, I’m expecting goals. Cardiff’s higher quality might just edge it on the night, but Wrexham’s determination and home advantage make this a much tougher tie than the visitors might like.

If Wrexham can produce the same intensity that saw them knock out Championship sides in earlier rounds, this could go right down to the wire. I’m backing both sides to score but Cardiff’s experience and form may just see them through to the quarter-finals.
