Southampton remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table and need just one more point to avoid matching Derby County’s unwanted record of just 11 points in a season.

With only three games left, time is almost up for the Saints.

Last weekend’s trip to Leicester summed up their campaign. The Foxes ended a 12-match winless run with a 2-0 win, leaving Southampton with 28 defeats from 35 matches.

Only four clubs in Premier League history have lost as many in a single season – Derby County, Sunderland, Sheffield United and Ipswich Town.

Next up is the visit of Manchester City, and it’s hard to see anything but another tough afternoon for Ruben Selles’ side.

By their own standards, this has been a below-par season for Manchester City. But they remain in the hunt for a top-four finish and have already secured a place in another FA Cup final.

City are unbeaten in their last seven league matches, with five wins and two draws in that run. That form has taken them up to third, just three points behind Arsenal in second, and they’ll believe they can close the gap.

Recent history is firmly in City’s favour. They’ve lost just one of their last 15 Premier League meetings with Southampton, and two of their last three wins at St Mary’s have finished 4-1.
